Ainsley sets school, conference records in heptathlon

CHESTER, Pa. – Haverford College sophomore Jeffrey Ainsley broke the school and Centennial Conference records in the heptathlon Friday night at the Widener Indoor Track & Field Invitational, winning the event with a two-day total of 4,416 points.

On Thursday Ainsley stormed to the lead with season-best performances in the 55-meter dash, long jump, high jump, and shot put. He won each event to finish the day with 2,540 points, more than 500 points ahead of Alvernia University's Jeremiah Clinchoc in second place.

Friday night's results were even better for Ainsley who ended the night a few points shy of 1,000 ahead of Clinchoc in the runner-up spot.

Ainsley opened Friday in the pole vault, capturing the event by clearing a height of 3.55 meters (11 feet, 7.75 inches) on the last of three attempts at the height.

The 55m hurdles were more of the same as Ainsley raced to the finish line in a winning time of 8.11 seconds, 0.6 seconds ahead of second-place finisher Brody Honeycutt of Alvernia.

In the final event of the grueling two-day competition, Clinchoc out leaned Ainsley at the finish of the 1,000m run as the pair were separated by five-tenths of a second. Clinchoc won the race with a time of 3:09.13 to Ainsley's 3:09.57.

Ainsley's total of 4,416 points shattered his conference and school records set last season when he accumulated a total of 4,312 points at the 2013 version of the same invitational at Widener. Ainsley's new career-best total will likely place him within the top 15 performances nationally. Before the rest of the weekend's results are complete, Ainsley sits in 14th amongst the nation's leaders in the event within Division III.
