Men's Track & Field Impresses at McElligott Invitational

HAVERFORD, Pa. - The Haverford College men's track & field team contested its second home meet of the 2021-22 season on Saturday inside Alumni Field House, making the most of a depleted McElligott Invitational field due to weather conditions. Haverford competed against Swarthmore and Widener on Saturday, with some strong marks against familiar foes dotting the landscape. 

Competing in the men's mile, Jamie Moreland helped headline the day for the Fords by winning the contest in a time of 4:20.9, almost three seconds ahead of Aiden Tomov of Swarthmore. The time for Moreland is the sixth-fastest in the Centennial Conference so far this season. In third place for the Fords was Reza Eshghi (4:23.75), as he led a pack of experienced runners that included Nico Tripeny (fourth, 4:25.95), Ryan Kredell (fifth, 4:30.58), Peter LaRochelle (sixth, 4:34.44), and Matthew Denton (seventh, 4:35.92). 

Jeffrey Allen (4:39.25), Ryan Quenemoen (4:39.65), Scott Kaiser (4:40.26), and Reed Solomon (4:42.08) also finished in the top 15 while Evan Daniels (4:45.23), Luca Ponticello (4:46.66), Seamus Flannery (5:02.53), Kieran McDonnell (5:11.34), and Seawon Park (5:18.20) rounded out the contingent. 

In an exhilarating 3,00 meters, Charlie Ferguson paced Haverford with a mark of 8:46.97 for the event crown. Peter Buckley was second (8:47.53) while Max Brelig notched a third place finish (8:53.18) ahead of Miles Colescott (8:54.54) in fourth. Aaron Bratt crossed sixth (9:21.15), while Sammy Schindel (9:32.78) was seventh. Jay Whitesell notched a 12th place showing (10:34.86). 

Ravi Eaton proved his interdisciplinary prowess on the track and in the jumping pit, finishing second in the 400 meters with a time of 54.04. The mark in that sprint was accompanied by an event title in the triple jump, as Eaton cleared a distance of 12.37 meters (40 feet, seven inches) to take home the event crown.

The 800 meter grouping included a fourth place finish from Caesar Dai (2:13.79) and a fourth place crossing from Sam Diaz (2:17.19). Haverford's relay team of Tripeny, Solomon, Eshghi, and Moreland also clocked a 3:44.60 in the 4x400 meter relay finals for a second place finish. 

Competing in the sprints, Ashton Smith finished fifth in the 60 meters (7.73), while Amon-Ra Kamit was sixth overall (7.8). The 200 meter grouping saw Jonathan Hill finish second (24.30), while Jacob Foster was third (24.69). Matthew Ruiz was ninth for the Fords (29.10). The long jump saw Foster put forth a great performance for second place, clearing 5.74 meters (18 feet, 10 inches) while Nathan Ma finished fourth clearing 5.4 meters (17 feet, 8.75 inches). Kevin Villafane made his debut in the pole vault, clearing a mark of 2.55 meters (8 feet, 4.25 inches) in that event. 

In the weight throw, conducted Friday at Widener, Rasaaq Shittu turned in a 12th place showing with a mark of 6.03 meters (19 feet, 9.5 inches). Tiger Wang was 13th with a mark of 5.12 meters (16 feet, 9.75 inches). 

Shittu followed that mark up on Saturday with a seventh-place finish in the shot put with a throw of 9.70 meters (31 feet, 10 inches).  Juan Miguel Pinto Diaz was eighth clearing 7.9 meters (25 feet, 11 inches), while Wang was ninth with a mark of 7.58 meters (24 feet, 10.5 inches) and Ethan Ezray made his collegiate debut with a 10th-place finish, notching 6.39 meters (20 feet, 11.75 inches). 

The Fords return to action on Saturday, February 5, sending a contingent to Medford, Massachusetts for the Tufts Cupid Challenge (10 a.m.). Another group of Haverford athletes will stay closer to home, making the return trip to Collegeville for the Frank Colden Invitational at Ursinus (10 a.m.).
