Pair book passage to men's cross country nationals

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Anders Hulleberg and Tim Schoch will definitely be representing the Haverford College men's cross country team at next Saturday's national meet, but they may not be alone as the Fords' third place finish at the NCAA Mideast Regional could earn the squad an at-large bid into the big race.

Allegheny took the Regional team title with 59 points followed by runner-up Carnegie Mellon's 69 points and Haverford's 83 points. Centennial Conference champion Dickinson finished fourth with 90.The individual title was captured by Allegheny's Chris Marker who covered the 8-kilometer course in a time of 24 minutes, 54.3 seconds.

Hulleberg's sixth-place time of 25:14.4 and Schoch's ninth-place time of 25:23.9 assured the pair of at-large bids to the national race by finishing among the top-seven individuals not already qualified by virtue of their teams earning automatic bids from a first or second place finish in the team scoring. Hulleberg would be the third individual invited while Schoch would receive the sixth of the seven regional at-large invites.

The possibility of the team earning one of the 16 national at-large bids is strong and backed by history. Last season the Fords were fourth in the region, were extended a bid to the meet, then finished 16th in the nation.

If Haverford does earn a bid Monday it will field a full team at nationals for the 17th consecutive season.

At Saturday's regional in Bethlehem, the Fords were able to move past their Centennial foes from Dickinson on the heels of aggressive races from Chris Southwick (18th), Andrew Lanham (24th) and Joseph Carpenter (26th). And together with the team's remaining two runners, Jordan Schilit (28th) and Andrew Sturner (32nd), the Fords placed their entire team within the top-35 which earns All-Mideast honors for the seven Fords.

The national race will take place Saturday, Nov. 21, in Cleveland, Ohio.
