Fords run away with men's title at Centennial cross country championship

ELKRIDGE, Md. – Pushing its five scoring runners across the finish line within the top seven spots, the Haverford College men's cross country team recaptured the Centennial Conference title Saturday afternoon at the Belmount Conference Center.

The Fords won the initial 15 conference titles after the league formed and began competing in 1993. Rival Dickinson College ended the run in 2008 and took home the trophy again in 2009 before today's strong effort from the Scarlet and Black brought the title back home.

Haverford senior Anders Hulleberg covered the 8-kilometer course in 24 minutes, 35.00 seconds to bring home the individual title and Runner of the Meet Award.

A pair of Dickinson runners followed Hulleberg but the next four to cross the finish line wore the white singlet's of Haverford to easily clinch the team title for the Fords.

Lucas Fuentes (24:58.70) was fourth followed immediately by teammates Tim Schoch (24:59.00), Chris Southwick (24:59.70) and Eric Arnold (25:00.00). These four Haverford runners, along with Hulleberg, all earned first-team all-conference honors.

Earning second-team honors from Haverford were Jordan Schilit (ninth, 25:11.00), Faraz Sohail (10th, 25:13.00), Ivo Milic-Strkalj (11th, 25:21.00) and Joseph Carpenter (14th, 25:33.00).

Andrew Sturner (15th, 25:34.90), Brian Sokas (17th, 25:39.20) and Peter Kissin (19th, 25:48.00) cracked the top-20 for the Fords.

Haverford's winning total of 23 points out-paced the 39 posted by runner-up Dickinson and third-place Johns Hopkins (95 points). Swarthmore finished fourth enabling the Fords to pick up their fifth fall point in the Hood Trophy challenge between Haverford and the Garnet.

The Fords head west for their next race, the NCAA Mideast Regional, on Saturday, November 13 in Slippery Rock, Pa.
