Runner-up finish for Fords at national championship

OSHKOSH, Wis. - The defending NCAA Division III national champions from Haverford College finished in the runner-up spot at Saturday's 2011 men's cross country national championship meet, led by a trio of Fords who raced to All-America status.

North Central (Ill.) College, ranked No. 1 all season in the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association national polls, captured the 2011 crown with 110 points. The second-place Fords accumulated 172 points while Washington (Mo.) University was third with 206 points.

Junior Jordan Schilit led the Fords in Wis. with an 18th place time of 24 minutes, 35.85 seconds for the eight-kilometer course. Schilit, sophomore Brian Sokas (29th, 24:40.32) and senior Andrew Sturner (31st, 24:42.37) ran to all-American honors with their top-35 finishes.

Seniors Eric Arnold (43rd, 24:55.53) and Tim Schoch (105th, 25:18.64) rounded out the Fords' scoring places. Juniors Peter Kissin (179th, 25:45.99) and Ivo Milic-Strkalj (251st, 26:25.76) were the other runners in the mix for Haverford.

Haverford's scoring five were separated by less than 43 seconds. The Cardinals from North Central posted a 41-second spread between their first and fifth runner. St. Thomas (Minn.) College senior Ben Sathre was the race winner leading the pack with a winning time of 23:44.27.

The Fords were the top-placing Centennial Conference team at the championship as Dickinson College finished in fourth place with 341 points and Johns Hopkins University was 26th with 584 points.

Saturday's runner-up finish closes out another strong season for the Fords who, along their path to the national meet, brought home Centennial Conference and NCAA Mideast regional titles for the second straight fall. Schilit captured the conference's individual championship, and head coach Tom Donnelly was named the league's and region's men's coach of the year.
