Fords named D-III Scholar Team of the Year for second year in a row

NEW ORLEANS - The Haverford College men's cross country team was named the 2011 NCAA Division III Scholar Team of the Year by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) on Thursday. This marks the second consecutive year, and three out of the last five years, the Fords have earned the prestigious national academic honor.

Scholar teams of the year are determined from among those who earned all-academic status and placed highest as a team at the most recent NCAA championships.

Haverford ran to first place finishes in the Centennial Conference and Mideast regional on its way to a runner-up finish at the national meet this past November. Applying that same determination to succeed in the classroom, the Fords accumulated a 3.48 grade point average (GPA) during the fall semester.

One of 131 D-III programs to earn all-academic status, Haverford tallied the highest GPA of the seven Centennial institutions honored.

Team members Eric Arnold, Peter Kissin, Ivo Milic-Strkalj, Tim Schoch, and Andrew Sturner earned individual all-academic distinction last week.
