Championship preview: Men's Cross Country

HANOVER, Ind. – Haverford College's men's cross country team will race in the NCAA Division III 2013 national championship meet Saturday afternoon but the squad will have a different look from the team that tied for second last fall.

The Fords, ranked 17th in the latest national poll, finished third in the Mideast Region meet on Saturday, Nov. 16 and of the seven scoring runners in that race for Haverford, only three return from national participation at the 2012 championship.

The leader of that trio is senior All-American Christopher Stadler who finished 12th last November and who is coming off a narrow, one-second runner-up finish at the 2013 region meet to Allegheny College's Bobby Over, the national-runner-up in 2012.

In addition to Stadler, senior Avi Bregman, fifth at the recent region meet, and junior Joel Christian, 99th last Saturday, were part of the Haverford squad at the 2012 meet. Bregman finished 95th and Christian was 49th to help Haverford earn a spot on the national awards ceremony podium.

Likely to also compete for the Fords in Saturday's eight-kilometer race at 12:15 p.m. (CST) will be sophomores Charlie Marquardt, Sam Fujimori and Dylan Verner-Crist, as well as freshman Jimmy Gorman.

The 2013 championship race includes 15 returning all-Americans but the meet will have a new individual champion as the 2012 titlist exhausted his eligibility.

North Central (Ill.) College captured the past two team trophies and enters Saturday's race as the top-ranked team in the nation. Washington (Mo.) University and St. Olaf (Minn.) College are ranked second and third, respectively, and are expected to challenge North Central for the top step on the podium.
