Men's Cross Country Rises To No. 14 In National Poll

HAVERFORD, Pa. – The Haverford College men's cross country team rose in the USTFCCCA national poll following a solid performance at the Main Line Invitational on Friday. The Fords jumped two spots to No. 14 in the national poll and held steady as the No. 2 squad in the regional rankings behind Carnegie Mellon.

North Central (Ill.) remains as the top team in the national poll with seven of eight first-place votes, just in front of SUNY Geneseo who recieved the other first place tally. Williams, UW-Eau Claire and Pomona-Pitzer round out the national top five. Haverford is the top Centennial Conference team nationally as Johns Hopkins is No. 17 and Dickinson checks in at No. 32. The Fords' No. 14 ranking is their best mark of the 2016 campaign thus far.

Carnegie Mellon held onto its top rank in the Mideast regional poll with 67 voting points. Haverford is second with 61 voting points while Johns Hopkins received 59. Widener and Dickinson round out the top five in the Mideast region with 47 and 46 points, respectively.

Henry Woods finished as the top Haverford harrier with a time of 20:02.5, second only to top Division III finisher Ernie Pitone of Widener (19:23.3). The time was ninth overall and a personal record in the distance for Woods. Finishing second for the Fords was sophomore Ryan Herlihy, who crossed the finish in a time of 20:40.8, a new personal best four mile time. Jimmy Gorman finished in fifth place with a time of 20:43.6. Graham Peet (20:45.4) and Greg Morgan (20:52.3) rounded out the top five for the Fords, as Haverford finished with a spread of just 49.8 seconds between the scoring five.

Head coach Tom Donnelly's team Haverford will be back in action on Saturday, October 1 at 10:00 am at the Paul Short Invitational. The meet, hosted by Lehigh University, will take place at the Murray H. Goodman Campus in Bethlehem, Pa.
