Season Review: Men's Cross Country Repeats As Centennial Champs, Finishes 18th At NCAAs

Season Highlights: The Haverford College men's cross country team again defended its Centennial Conference Championship (Oct. 29), with four finishers within the top 10 in the 8K race. Henry Woods placed second overall in the race, which was held on the Haverford campus at the Alumni Cross Country course. Haverford picked up its 21st conference title in 24 campaigns, dispatching Johns Hopkins who finished second. The Fords qualified for the Division III Championships by virtue of its second place finish at the Mideast Regional in Center Valley, Pa. (Nov. 12). Woods finished third overall in the Regional to pace the Fords. In its 24th overall appearance in the NCAA meet, Haverford finished 18th while Woods was named All-American after a 22nd place individual finish.

Season Notes: Donnelly picked up Centennial Conference Coach of the Year honors for the third straight season and sixth time overall … Woods was the top Haverford finisher in every race he competed in this season … Jimmy Gorman completed an impressive run of four national championship putting himself amongst an elite group of Haverford distance runners that includes Seamus McElligott and Karl Paranya … Sophomore Graham Peet remains on track to join the exclusive club after competing in his second NCAA championship in as many years on campus … Haverford finished within the Top 20 of the nation for 24th straight season dating back to 1993 … The Fords were ranked as high as No. 14 in the USTFCCCA Poll.

Looking ahead: The Fords will return All-American Woods for his senior season as Ryan Herlihy, Dylan Gearinger, Graham Peet and Greg Morgan will also return from All-Region and All-Centennial conference seasons. Haverford loses co-captains Gorman and Charlie Hale from its NCAA contingent, but the future remains bright with a talented sophomore class ready to step into a leadership role as juniors in 2017. Haverford will waste no time before getting back to competitive running as the Indoor Track and Field season begins on Dec. 8 with the Haverford Holiday Meet at the Alumni Field House.
