Full Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area Release

HAVERFORD, Pa. - Haverford College men's cross country seniors Sam McCalpin and Conor Madden have been named to the 2019 Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area team. The Academic All-Area team is voted on by the sports information offices of the 30 institutions from the Philadelphia metropolitan area.

In order to be eligible for Academic All-Area honors, an athlete must be in at least his or her second year at the institution and hold a cumulative grade-point average of 3.20 or better. Haverford is the only school in the entire Philadelphia area with two representatives on the all-area team. The 2019 season represents the third consecutive season in which men's cross country has had multiple honorees on the seven man squad.

McCalpin, a chemistry major, was named second-team All-Centennial Conference for the second time in 2019 after finishing 10th at the conference championships last month at Gettysburg. The co-captain was previously named the Centennial Conference Scholar Athlete of the Year and repeats the Philadelphia Inquirer honor for the second consecutive season. The Louisville, Kentucky product is a three-time qualifier to the NCAA national championships and a three-time All-Mideast Region selection by the USTFCCCA. McCalpin has also been a member of the Centennial Conference Fall Academic Honor Roll and the USTFCCCA All-Academic team in each season of eligibility for those respective awards.

Madden earns the honor for the first time after an impressive senior campaign. The Haddonfield, N.J. native was an NCAA Championship Qualifier for the first time in 2019 and was named All-Mideast Region after pacing Haverford at the Mideast Regional Championship at Lehigh. Madden finished 17th overall to lead the Fords on the course in Bethlehem. The English major also finished 18th at the Centennial Conference Championship at Gettysburg and is a three-time member of the Centennial Conference Honor Roll.

Haverford competed at the NCAA Championships for the 27th consecutive season in November, finishing 27th overall in Louisville.

The Fords are now in the thick of the indoor track & field campaign, with action slated to resume in January of 2020 at the NYC Gotham Cup on Staten Island. Events are slated to begin at 2 p.m. on January 17.
