Women’s basketball holds off Red Devils, 45-40

HAVERFORD, Pa. – The Haverford College women's basketball team picked up its first Centennial Conference win of the season with a 45-40 victory over Dickinson College Tuesday evening at Gooding Arena. The Fords led for the entirety of the contest and held off Dickinson's late surge that cut the lead to one with less than seven minutes remaining.

Nina Voith posted her first double-double of the season with 16 points and 10 rebounds to lead Haverford (3-2, 1-1 CC). Dominique Meeks, Liz Mayell and Calla Miller all scored seven points apiece while Mayell and Miller dished out three assists each. Cara Wyant grabbed eight boards and Meeks added five to help the Fords to a 39-24 advantage.

The Fords jumped out of the gate to a 9-0 lead which was capped by a Victoria Sobocinski three-pointer. Haverford extended the lead to 12-4 and eventually 20-6 thanks to treys by Miller and Mayell. The Fords connected on 3-of-4 three-balls in the first half. Dickinson (2-2, 0-2) closed the half on a 9-3 run to pull within nine at halftime. Haverford committed its seventh team foul with 10:54 remaining and the Red Devils took advantage, converting five free throws on non-shooting fouls.

A three by Voith from the corner on a kick out from Meeks with 15:40 showing gave Haverford its largest lead of the second half, 31-20. After that basket the Fords went seven minutes with without scoring. The Fords saw their lead shrink from 11 to seven in that time. After Meeks' layup ended the dry spell, consecutive layups by Bridget Borgese and Alesha Sisco made it a three-point game, 33-30, with 8:04 left.

A minute-and-a-half later a jumper by Borgese pulled Dickinson within one. Haverford scored on its next three possessions, but the Red Devils countered every time. With 50 seconds on the clock Miller broke through a double-team on the left wing and found a wide open Mayell for an easy layup, making the score 41-38. Carole Dempsey hit a jumper on Dickinson's next possession, but Voith buried both her free throws with 26 seconds left.

A missed three by Dempsey wound up in a jump ball with nine ticks left. With the arrow pointing in Haverford's direction the Red Devils fouled Voith on the inbound pass and she made both free throws to provide the final margin.

Sisco finished the night with 16 points and nine rebounds – both team-highs for Dickinson. Dempsey added 10 points.
