Balanced attack leads Fords past Bryn Mawr

Balanced attack leads Fords past Bryn Mawr

BRYN MAWR, Pa. - The Haverford College women's basketball team used a balanced attack to take down host Bryn Mawr College, 69-40, on Monday night at Class of 1958 Gymnasium in Centennial Conference action.

The Fords (14-7, 11-6 CC) bolted out to a 14-4 advantage as they went 6-for-7 from the field in the opening four minutes of the contest. Four different players contributed on the scoreboard in the initial burst. Continuing to operate efficiently on offense, Haverford widened its lead to 24-10 at the midway point of the half as the Fords connected on 10 of their 20 field goal attempts. The Owls (1-19, 0-16) closed within seven, 26-19, with 5:38 on the clock until intermission but the visitors surged once more and ended the half on a 15-2 run. Nina Voith capped the run with a last-second shot from the top of the key that beat the buzzer and gave Haverford a 20-point advantage at the break, 41-21.

Turning the ball over just four times in the opening 20 minutes, the Fords effectively shared the ball to tally nine assists on 16 baskets. Victoria Sobocinski made good use of the extra pass with a career-high six assists. Four different players hit three-pointers as Haverford went 5-for-9 from behind the arc in the first half. The team effort continued on the defensive end as well where the Fords controlled the glass and held Bryn Mawr without an offensive rebound.

Duplicating its hot start to the game, Haverford scored the first eight points after the break to diminish thoughts of an Owls' rally. Sixteen points from the bench helped keep Bryn Mawr at arm's length over the remainder of the game as the Fords captured their third straight victory.

Haverford, the lone squad in the Centennial that does not feature a player among the ranks of the top-15 conference scoring leaders, prospered once again with a balanced attack. Voith paced the Fords with a season-high 14 points but she had a deep supporting cast as Rachel Baskin and Jacquelyne Pizzuto chipped in with 10 points apiece. Dominique Meeks added nine points and three steals while Shannon Smith matched her career high with eight points to go along with a game-high three blocks.

A committed effort on the boards saw every player on the Haverford roster grabbing at least one rebound with Voith leading the way with five.

The Fords also made Bryn Mawr's Nicolette Parmese, the second-leading scorer in the conference, work hard throughout the night as she needed 22 shots to tally a game-high 22 points. Liandra Curtis was the high rebounder in the contest with seven.

Aiming for its fourth consecutive conference victory, Haverford welcomes Ursinus College to Gooding Arena on Wednesday night at 6 p.m. in the first of two straight home contests. The Fords, currently tied for third in the Centennial standings, will look to sweep the season series from the Bears (10-11, 7-9) and keep pace in the chase for a spot in the conference playoffs.
