Sizzling start pushes Fords past Immaculata

IMMACULATA, Pa. - A strong start by the Haverford College women's basketball team propelled the Fords past host Immaculata University, 60-53, on Sunday night in non-conference action at Alumnae Hall.

Haverford (14-1) hit its first seven shots from the field to move out to a 15-5 lead after six minutes of play. Undeterred by a couple of misses, the Fords continued to surge as they stretched their lead to 21-5 on a jumper by senior Cara Wyant with 10 and a half minutes remaining until intermission.

The effort was just as impressive on the defensive end of the floor as Haverford limited the Mighty Macs (13-4) to just three field goals in the first 12 minutes of action. Immaculata did not reach double figures on the scoreboard until Meghan Gallagher converted a layup with 7:58 left on the first-half clock.

Lindsay Cras' bucket at the 2:32 mark pulled Immaculata within 10 and led to a Fords' timeout but Haverford responded by scoring six of the last eight points of the half to take a 14-point lead, 40-26, into the locker room. Haverford shot 58. 1 percent (18-for-31) from the field in opening 20 minutes.

The Mighty Macs entered the contest undefeated at home on the season but the Fords squelched thoughts of an Immaculata rally by scoring 11 of the first 16 points of the second half. Wyant's jumper with 10 minutes remaining in the contest gave Haverford its largest lead of the night at 51-31.

The Fords' defense kept the Mighty Macs at a distance over the remainder of play as Haverford snapped the hosts' six-game winning streak.

Senior Nina Voith just missed a double-double as she led the Fords with 17 points and nine rebounds. Shannon Smith matched her career high with 11 points while Elizabeth Lynch, Jacquelyne Pizzuto and Wyant chipped in with eight apiece. Pizzuto also tallied a game-high nine assists as Haverford registered 22 assists on 26 field goals.

Haverford outrebounded Immaculata 43-24 and limited the Mighty Macs to just seven second-chance opportunities overall.

Adriana Sciascia paced the Mighty Macs with 14 points and Alison Zimny added 10.

The Fords' sixth consecutive victory enabled Haverford to finish off the non-conference portion of its schedule with a 6-0 record.

Facing the second of three straight road games, the Fords travel to Ursinus College on Tuesday night. The Centennial Conference game against the Bears (6-10, 4-7 CC) begins at 6 p.m.
