Fourth Quarter Run Propels Women's Basketball over WAC

CHESTERTOWN, Md. – A 13-1 run in the final frame proved to be the difference as the Haverford College women's basketball team (10-6, 5-4 CC) defeated the Washington College Shorewomen (3-12, 0-9 CC), 70-59 at the Cain Athletic Center on Monday evening.

Ahead 48-47 with 7:54 to go, Haverford recorded 13 of the next 14 points to take a 61-48 advantage with 1:59 remaining in the game. Senior Olivia Walsh tallied seven of her 15 points during that stretch to put the game away.

Walsh and freshman Katie Cook led the Fords with 15 points each. Walsh, who finished in double figures for the sixth time in seven games, tied her career best in points and snagged eight rebounds. Cook set a personal best in points, grabbed five rebounds, dished out four assists and had a steal. Sophomore Samantha Wetzel posted 13 points and eight rebounds in the win.

The first quarter was an evenly played 10 minutes that featured nine lead changes. After two free throws from junior Clio Bodie, a basket by Washington College's Emily Thiemann put the home team in front, 13-12. Walsh made two free throws to give the Fords a 14-13 lead at the end of the stanza.

A three-pointer by Bodie gave Haverford its largest advantage of the first half at 23-15 with 6:25 left in the second quarter. Another bucket from Thiemann cut the Shorewomen's deficit to one (25-24), but Haverford stayed as the frontrunner, 32-30 at halftime.

The Fords kept their command of the scoreboard for the entirety of the third quarter, but could not pull away. A three-pointer by Cook as the game clocked expired put Haverford ahead by five (46-41) after 30 minutes of game action.

A layup by freshman Tori Hopkins began the final frame, but the Shorewomen scored six consecutive points to get within one (48-47). Following the 13-1 sprint by Haverford, Washington College would not get within nine points the rest of the contest.

Head coach Bobbi Morgan's squad made 29 free throws which is the third most in a single game in program history. The Fords made 5-of-10 from beyond the arc and outrebounded the Shorewomen, 38-34. Washington College's Ali Grundy had a game-high 22 points in the loss.

Tonight was the women's basketball team's sixth straight win and seventh in eight games over Washington College. Haverford was won five of its last seven contests. Hood Trophy rival Swarthmore will come to the Gooding '84 Arena on Wednesday for a doubleheader. The women tip-off at 6 p.m. while the men start at 8 p.m. The annual Senior Athlete Blanket Ceremony will take place at halftime of the men's game.
