Women's Basketball's Walsh a Standout on Senior Day

HAVERFORD, Pa. – The Haverford College women's basketball team honored its only senior, Olivia Walsh, prior to the game against McDaniel on Saturday at the Gooding '84 Arena. Walsh led the Fords' offense, tying her career high of 17 points including four three-pointers and pulled in nine rebounds in 41 minutes. In the end, the Fords' efforts came up just shy in a 53-50 overtime defeat.

Haverford trailed early, victims of a 7-2 run in the first 5:31 of game action. The Fords quickly countered with a 12-5 run led by two Katie Cook jumpers. That spurt gave the hosts a 14-12 lead at the end of the first quarter. Cook finished with seven points, four rebounds, and four assists.

The Fords (14-9, 9-7 CC) managed to carry that momentum over and continued their outstanding play in the second quarter. Their superb defense held Centennial Conference leading scorer Lindsey Nichols scoreless through the first half on 0-of-9 shooting from the floor.

The offense was sparked by Walsh, who was locked in and finished the half with 12 points and six rebounds, leading Haverford to a 21-16 advantage at the break.

The second half told a different tale as the Green Terror (19-4, 14-2 CC) turned up the tempo of their defense and woke up on offense. They forced 13 turnovers in the third and fourth quarters in mounting their comeback.

Sierra Berkel contributed double-digit points for Haverford, netting four field goals for 10 points. She also grabbed eight rebounds.

Samantha Wetzel asserted her presence down low, inhaling 17 rebounds. The Fords out-rebounded McDaniel 44-37.

Women's basketball looks to wrap up the regular season next week with two Centennial Conference matchups. The team will travel to Johns Hopkins on Monday to take on the Blue Jays at 6 p.m. before closing the season at Swarthmore on Saturday at 12:30 p.m.
