HAVERFORD, Pa. - The Haverford College women's basketball team (6-11, 3-9 CC) came up short in its bid to upset No. 10 Johns Hopkins (16-1, 12-0 CC) Tuesday night at Gooding '84 Arena, falling by a final score of 62-39, on Senior Varsity Blanket night. At halftime of the contest, each Haverford senior student-athlete received a varsity letter blanket as recognition for their contributions on and off the field.

Out of the gates, each team could not buy a basket in the opening minutes of the contest, until a Johns Hopkins' three-pointer from Kara Milliken broke the scoreless tie, giving the Blue Jays a 3-0 lead. Ally Landau answered right back for the Fords, sinking a mid-range jumper to pull within one point, 3-2.

Beth Corelli knocked down the second triple in a row for the Blue Jays to push the JHU lead to 6-2, only to be followed up by a Greta Miller layup as Johns Hopkins went up 8-2 over the Scarlet and Black. Corelli tacked on two more points for a 10-2 JHU lead, forcing Haverford to call timeout with 3:45 remaining in the first quarter.

Out of the timeout, both teams put up six points apiece to head into the second quarter with the score 16-8 in favor of the Blue Jays. Audrey Jakway added four points for the Fords in the six and six scoring stretch.

Macie Feldman started the second quarter off with a bang, going on a 5-0 scoring run herself to warrant another timeout from Haverford with the scoreboard showing a 21-8 scoreline in favor of JHU. After both teams put up four points each out of the timeout, it was the Blue Jays turn to call timeout, holding onto a 25-12 lead with 4:40 to go in the half.

Just six more points were scored to close out the second quarter, with Haverford edging out the Blue Jays 4-2, trailing 27-16 heading into the halftime break.

At the intermission, Landau led all scorers with 10 points, while Feldman paced the Blue Jays in scoring with nine points and rebounds with seven boards.

The Scarlet and Black started off the third quarter with two unanswered baskets from Shae Mercer and Landau to pull within seven points at 27-20. Following a short 4-0 Haverford run, JHU jumped out to a 7-4 scoring run of its own capped off by a Milliken triple, heading into a Johns Hopkins' timeout up 34-24 with 5:40 remaining in the third stanza.

Out of the timeout, the Blue Jays continued to keep their foot on the pedal, putting five unanswered points up to boost the JHU lead to 39-24, prompting a 30-second Scarlet and Black timeout with 4:20 left to go in the third quarter.

Johns Hopkins and Haverford continued to trade baskets out of the Scarlet and Black discussion, with the Fords outpacing the Blue Jays 6-4 to end the third period trailing 44-30. In the final scoring span of the third quarter, the Fords saw three different players find the bottom of the basket as Erin Albright, Landau, and Jakway all contributed points.

The final stanza started off favorably for the Blue Jays, as JHU opened up the fourth period with a 10-2 scoring, to stretch the lead out to 54-42. Feldman rattled off six points in the scoring run, while Michaela O'Neil added four points.

With 4:55 left to go, Corelli sunk another shot from behind the three-point arc to extend the Blue Jayy lead to 57-32, forcing the Fords to call another timeout.

The final four minutes and change, saw the teams exchange baskets back-and-forth with the Scarlet and Black ending the contest with a 7-5 edge over JHU. In the final minutes, the Fords saw Mercer, Jakway, Abigail Clark, and Lily Zawisny add points. Despite that strong shooting performance down the stretch, the Fords ultimately fell short with the Blue Jays able to seal things late.

Feldman ended the contest as the scoring leader, dropping 20 points off of a 6-of-17 shooting display, as well as going 7-of-8 from the charity stripe. Landau led Haverford in scoring with 14 points on the night, with Jakway not too far behind, putting up 10 points in the defeat.

A quick turnaround now awaits for the Fords, as another home contest is on the docket Thursday. Haverford faces off with Ursinus in Centennial Conference action beginning at 6 p.m., with the men's game against the Bears to follow at approximately 8 p.m. The contests will be part of Haverford's Play With Pride Night.
