Women's Fencing Topples Local Rivals at Tri-Co Invitational

HAVERFORD, Pa. – The Haverford College women's fencing team continued its unblemished season at home with a pair of wins at the Tri-Co Invitational. The Fords improved to a perfect 6-0 inside the Andy Kates Fencing Salle on the year with another impressive showing in front of the home fans.

Opening up the day's bouts against rival Swarthmore, Haverford went a perfect 9-0 across all three weapon squads to make it a complete sweep between the Tri-Co rivals. With the 27-0 blanking, Haverford improved to 7-0 all-time against Swarthmore on the women's side. However, Saturday's victory was the first shutout of the rival Garnet in program history. Leading the charge in the sweep was co-captain Julie Petersen. The Fords' senior leader was touched just twice in each of her three epee bouts.

After resting up during the second round of fencing bouts, the women prepared to take on Bryn Mawr. In the meeting against the Owls, it was the foil squad that led the team to victory with an 8-1 advantage in that weapon. Both the epee and sabre squads emerged with a 6-3 edge in their respective weapons to cap the 20-7 team score.

Closing the day with an exhibition match, the foil squad took on Drexel's men's foil squad. Haverford also controlled that weapon, winning by a 6-3 margin. The Fords were led by an undefeated Alexandra Morrison in those bouts.

The Tri-Co Invitational closed out the competition for the fall semester for the women's fencing team. The Fords will come back together after the winter break in anticipation of the spring semester schedule. When they return to competition, the first bouts they will face come at the always challenging Penn State Invitational on Saturday, January 16.
