POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - The Haverford College women's fencing team opened their regular season matches at the Vassar Invitational on Sunday afternoon. The squad fenced a grueling eight rounds, defeating three opponents, Yeshiva, Army West Point, and Fairleigh Dickinson, while dropping bouts to Wagner, Vassar, Drew, Denison and Wellesley.

Standout performances from first-years Aamina Dhar (15-4) in the sabre, and Sophie Gardiner (12-8) in the foil, were paced by senior foilist Golda Glasser, who pulled in 14 wins, and junior Caroline Donado, who contributed 13 wins to the sabre tally.  The relatively inexperienced epee squad was led by junior Ceanne Lyon, a recent switch-over from the foil squad, with six wins on the day. Strong performances by inexperienced competitors Petra Budavari (foil, four wins) and Maria Yea (epee, four wins) bode well for a young team.

Tight wins over FDU and West Point (both 14-13) showed the team's psychological mettle, and improvement over the season is the goal, as the Fords will look to unseat Vassar from their bronze medal perch in the EWFC (Eastern Women's Fencing Conference) at the end of the season.

The Fords will next be in action on Saturday, November 20 as the first home meet of the season, the D'Arnstein '09 Invitational gets underway. Fencing will begin at the Alumni Field House at approximately 10 a.m.
