Season Review: Season of growth for women's lacrosse

Season Review: Season of growth for women's lacrosse

Signature Wins: The Fords claimed an impressive 9-8 non-conference victory over visiting Stevenson University on March 5. Junior Diana Perry scored a team-high three goals and senior goalie Shannon Horn made several key stops in the final minute of play to preserve the hard-fought win over the Mustangs -- the eventual champion of the Commonwealth Conference.

Haverford registered a pair of tough Centennial Conference victories over McDaniel College and Dickinson College on March 29 and April 5, respectively. Nine different players tallied goals in the 18-14 win over McDaniel which went on to qualify for the conference tournament while a strong defensive effort led by freshman Sarina Manetta translated into a 13-7 win over Dickinson.

Season Notes: Junior Diana Perry paced the Fords (8-8, 4-5 CC) in goals (40), points (42) and draw controls (57) for the second consecutive campaign in 2014. Perry, who tallied goals in 15 of Haverford's 16 games on the season, tied for second in the Centennial with a team-high 12 free position goals that moved her into second all-time in program history (35) ... Sophomores Elyse Adler and Christina Gould tied for the team lead in assists with 10 ... Gould reached the 20-goal mark (22) for the second straight year on her way to finishing second on the team in points (32) ... Megan Gallagher became the 27th player in program history to surpass 100 points in her career as the senior tallied 29 points on the year (27 goals, 2 assists) to finish with 110 points overall ... Freshman Sarina Manetta made an instant impact in the midfield as she led the squad in ground balls (33) and caused turnovers (17) while finishing second in draw controls (29) and fourth in points (28) ... Senior goalie Shannon Horn recorded seven victories on the season to move into sixth all-time in career wins (20) ... Senior defender Anne Cullen, who earned the first all-conference recognition of her career, started every game of the season for the third consecutive year ... Haverford featured a balanced attack throughout the season as seven players reached double figures in goals ... Six of the Fords' first eight opponents on the season had participated in the 2013 national tournament ... Haverford came painstakingly close to pulling an upset over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, ranked 16th at the time, on March 13 in Clermont, Fla. Perry and Gallagher scored three goals apiece but the Engineers hung on for the 13-11 overtime victory.

Looking Ahead: Haverford will once again feature a balanced attack next season as it returns three players that reached the 20-goal mark in Diana Perry (40), Christina Gould (22) and Sarina Manetta (20). The Fords' firepower will be complemented by a veteran defense led by seniors Nicole Sockett and Brianna Robbins. Coach Lauren Wray believes the mix of battle-tested veterans and talented newcomers will lead Haverford back to the Centennial playoffs in 2015.
