Manetta, Gibbons Pick Up Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area Honors

HAVERFORD, Pa. -  Haverford senior midfielder Sarina Manetta and junior attacker Allie Gibbons were named to the Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area team, the Philadelphia Area Sports Information Directors Association (Philly-SIDA) announced on Wednesday morning. The team is nominated and voted on by the sports information offices of 30 area institutions from the Philadelphia metropolitan area.

In order to be eligible for academic all-area consideration, a student-athlete must be in at least his second year at the institution and own a cumulative grade-point average of 3.20 or higher. Haverford joins Penn, Saint Joseph's, Temple and West Chester as institutions with multiple honorees. 

The release also marks the first time Haverford has had multiple members on the squad since Mary Hobbs and Alex Waleko both took home the honor in 2010.

Manetta adds another award to cap an illustrious career at Haverford. She was named to to All-Region and All-Conference honors after a stellar senior campaign.  Manetta had a breakout 2017, tallying career-best 40 goals and 48 points while winning 64 draw controls. Her 40 goals included three game-winners. The Commack, N.Y. product set new career single-game highs in points, goals, draw controls and free-position goals during the 2017 season.

Manetta was also awarded Haveford's Gregory Kannerstein '63 Award, given to an individual whose combination of outstanding athletic achievement and leadership has been a significant factor in a team's competitive success and whose level of performance has brought distinction not only to the individual but also the entire athletic program.

In 2017, Manetta set a new single-season program high in draw controls (64) and draw controls per game (4.00). Manetta leaves Haverford in the top five in program history in draw controls (3rd), games played (4th) and shots on goal (4th).

Gibbons had a solid sophomore campaign for the Fords, earning All-Conference and All-Region honors. The Marylander helped key the offensive production for Haverford in 2017. Gibbons finished third in the Centennial with 53 goals and sixth in the conference with a 69.7 shooting percentage.

The attacker from Baltimore, Md., scored a career-best six goals against McDaniel on March 25. Her 53 goals this season was good for the 11th-most in a single season in Haverford program history. Entering her junior season, Gibbons has 71 career tallies.

Manetta and Gibbons join Alex Condon (Performer of the Year) and Lauren D'Amore of Penn, Kristen Kelbon and Nora McCallion of Saint Joseph's, Krissy Gallivan and Brenda McDermott of Temple, Sami Barnett and Ashley Pyle of West Chester, Hunter Leckonby of Chesnut Hill and Megan Racioppi of Widener in earning the honors.
