NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Haverford College women's lacrosse team outlasted host Christopher Newport on Thursday afternoon at Captains Turf Field, taking a 16-15 win over the Captains in sudden-victory overtime. The Fords registered an offensive barrage on the afternoon; with a 40-22 advantage in shots. Rina Rosnow tallied the game-winning goal in the extra period, burying one of her five goals on the afternoon to hand Haverford the dramatic victory.
Rachel Romens made five saves in goal, improving to 4-0 on the season with the victory between the pipes. Haverford is now 5-1 on the season following the victory while Christopher Newport falls to 3-5 on the year in defeat.
The Fords pulled out to an early 2-0 lead with goals from Belle McMahon and Kate Sollee before the Captains tallied two quickly to tie the score at 2-2 with 24:45 to play in the first half. Molly Lausten gave Haverford a lead at 3-2 with 24:26 to play before the Captains equalized at the 22:52 mark on a Catherine Leighty goal. The Fords rattled off a 3-0 run to take a 6-3 lead with 13:12 to play in the first half as Rosnow, Morris and Lausten all found the back of the net for Haverford in the stretch.
Christopher Newport roared back to tie the score at 6-6 with a 3-0 run of their own, equalizing at 10:02 as Julia Golden put one away to tie the contest. Allie Gibbons and Rosnow later scored for the Fords, taking an 8-6 lead with 5:46 to play in the first half. Colleen Bourgal scored two straight to tie the score at 8-8 and Christopher Newport took the halftime lead at 9-8 as Golden converted once more before the intermission.
CNU extended the lead to 10-8 with a goal from Madison Callan to open the second half scoring, but the Fords responded with a 3-0 run as Olivia DiRienz, Lausten and Rosnow all converted in the span of under two minutes as Haverford went ahead 11-10.
Catherine Leighty tied the score at 11-11 with 20:50 left in regulation, but Eliza Brosgol and Rosnow gave Haverford some breathing room with a pair of goals for a 13-11 lead. Bourgal scored at the 16:31 mark and again at 7:53 left in regulation, tying the score yet again at 13-13.
A 2-0 spurt for the Fords gave Haverford a 15-13 lead with Belle McMahon and Kate Sollee tallying for the Fords, but Bourgal and Golden both scored in the final ninety seconds of regulation to send the contest into extra time.
Rosnow tallied with 5:41 left in the overtime period, sending Haverford to a momentous road win to wrap up the Spring Break trip for the Fords. Rosnow had five goals to lead all scorers while Lausten added three. Emily Krupnick had a standout game defensively, with four ground balls and three caused turnovers. DiRienz posted six draw controls, a game high.
Bourgal had five goals for the Captains while Catherine Leighty added four. Leighty led the way with five draw controls and pitched in two draw controls. Goalkeeper Kaitlyn Ready collected four ground balls on the afternoon to lead the way for the Captains.
Ready faced 33 shots, making 17 saves in 60:19 of action in goal. The Fords held a 21-16 lead in ground balls and a slight 17-16 advantage in draw controls on the afternoon.
The Fords will next return to action with the conference opener at McDaniel on Saturday, March 24. Opening draw is slated for noon.
