Women's Lacrosse Felled by St. Mary's (Md.)

ST MARY'S CITY, Md. - The Haverford College women's lacrosse team (3-2) fell to host St. Mary's College of Maryland (5-2) on Wednesday afternoon, as the hosts used a 9-2 advantage in the second half to defend home turf with a 16-10 win in the midweek matchup. 

Hailey Morris paced Haverford offensively, adding four goals in the contest. Anna Meyers had a standout performance on the defensive end, adding a career-best five caused turnovers and matching the second-most CTs in program single-game history, The senior also collected five ground balls. Severtson caused a career-best four turnovers, while Julia Pascarella and Cubbin had a pair. Severtson, Courtney Cubbin, and Olivia DiRienz all added a pair of ground balls. 

Belle McMahon tallied the first goal of the contest just over two minutes into regulation, and the Fords scored immediately off the ensuing draw control. DiRienz took the draw, scurried down the field, and found the waiting stick of Julia Manetta in front of the goalmouth, doubling the early Haverford advantage with just 28:14 showing on the game clock.

A crafty move from Morris led to Haverford's third strike of the afternoon, and Katharine Ference gave the Fords a 4-1 advantage with 22:51 left in the first half. St Mary's struck back for a pair of goals, cutting the Haverford lead to just one with 18:52 remaining, but the Fords then rattled off three straight tallies, with Morris completing a first-half hat-trick ahead of a goal from DiRienz with 15:53 remaining.  

The Seahawks did not back down, adding two in a row to cut that lead back to 7-5. Morris found twine with 11:19 to play in the half, but Kate Bartholomew scored for Saint Mary's to trim the lead down to two with 8:21 to play. Kelly Emge then added a goal with just over a minute remaining to send the contest to the half with just a one-goal lead for Haverford. 

After almost eight scoreless minutes to begin the second, Saint Mary's tied the score with Bartholomew's fourth goal of the afternoon. An unassisted tally from Brosgol put Haverford back in front at 9-8, but back-to-back Seahawks goals within just 21 seconds gave the hosts a slight edge at 10-9 with 16 minutes remaining in regulation. 

Following a 4-0 spurt for St. Mary's, Pascarella's free-position goal with an empty net put Haverford within two at 12-10 with just over 12 minutes to play. The Seahawks controlled the tempo of the final 10 minutes, finishing the contest on a 4-0 run to grab control of the win.

DiRienz had a game-best five draw controls, while Morris added two to her stat line. Amelia Slade and Sarah Cahn split time in goal, with Slade stopping three shots in the first half while Cahn stopped three in the second. Bartholomew had a game-best five goals for the Seahawks, and controlled 10 draws in a standout performance. Aimee Uibel did well to stop the barrage of 31 Haverford shots making 12 saves for St. Mary's.

The meeting was the third in program history between the two sides, and the first in seven years. The Fords now return to action on Saturday, March 14 as the squad will head to Newport News, Va. for a matchup with Christopher Newport. Opening draw is slated for noon.
