Four from volleyball named all-conference; Rebecca Salvo repeats as player of the year

LANCASTER, Pa. – Four members of the Haverford College volleyball team were named All-Centennial Conference by the league office Thursday. Rebecca Salvo was named Player of the Year for the second straight season in addition to garnering first-team honors for the fourth time. Rachel Salvo and Kelsey Cantwell also made first-team while Kate Comey garnered second-team accolades.

Rebecca Salvo is just the second player in conference history to be voted player of the year in back-to-back seasons. She is also just the fifth four-time first-team selection. This season she led the Centennial with 425 kills and was second with 3.54 per set. Defensively, Salvo was second with 495 digs while averaging 4.12 per set.

Rachel Salvo became the 10th player to earn first-team accolades three times. Salvo averaged 2.97 kills and 3.20 digs this season. Her 341 kills were third-best in the Centennial. Salvo finished the season with 368 digs and was one of just four players in the conference with at least 330 kills and 330 digs. Twin sister Rebecca and Cantwell account for two of the other three.

Cantwell has earned all-conference honors for the second straight season after being named honorable mention in 2008. She led the conference with 72 service aces which was 30 more than she had last season. She had a breakout season offensively averaging 2.83 kills per set, nearly one more kill per set than a season ago, and finished fourth in the conference with 339 kills. Cantwell was fifth in the conference and second on the team with 406 digs and 3.38 per set.

Comey was the conference leader in assists (1,326) and assists per set (11.05) for the second straight year. With her precision at setter the Fords offense averaged a Centennial-best 13.54 kills per set and led the conference in that category for the two years she has run the offense.
