Volleyball clinches regular season title with sweep of Swarthmore

HAVERFORD, Pa. – The No. 25-ranked Haverford College volleyball team clinched its second regular season Centennial Conference title in three years with a 3-0 (25-17, 25-21, 25-20) sweep of Swarthmore College Wednesday evening. By virtue of winning the title the Fords will host the conference tournament Nov. 7-8.

With the victory, Haverford (27-3, 9-0 CC) ends its home slate with a 12-0 record on the Gooding Arena court. In 2007 the Fords also went undefeated at home in the regular season, going 11-0.

The Scarlet and Black used a balanced attack with seven different players registering a kill and a .317 team hitting percentage. Haverford held a 51-34 advantage in kills and held Swarthmore (18-8, 6-3 CC) to a .221 hitting percentage.

Rebecca Salvo led all players with 16 kills while hitting .364. Kelsey Cantwell had 10 kills, two service aces and two blocks. Olivia Coburn-Flynn added nine kills and hit a scorching .643. Caitlyn Tranquillo recorded a match-high 13 digs while Kate Comey dished out 37 assists.

Kathryn Montemurro and Genny Pezzola had 12 kills apiece for the Garnet. Hillary Santana and Kearney Bangs both tallied 10 digs. Bangs and Allison Coleman combined for 28 of the team's 33 assists.

Along with a victory by the field hockey team over Swarthmore Wednesday evening, the Fords hold a 3-0 advantage in the Hood Trophy standings.

Haverford closes out the regular season at McDaniel College Saturday with a 1 p.m. match.
