Volleyball finishes West Coast swing with 3-1 record

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – The No. 22-ranked Haverford College volleyball team continued its brilliant play on the West Coast by splitting its two matches Saturday to finish the Cal Lutheran Tournament with a 3-1 record. Haverford fell to the University of La Verne, 3-1, and then defeated the host Regals, 3-2.

Haverford (22-3) won the first set against La Verne, 25-22. La Verne took the second set by the same count and closed out the match with 25-14 and 25-11 victories. Rebecca Salvo and Kelsey Cantwell put forth dominant performances on both sides of the ball. Both players registered 12 kills while Salvo recorded 28 digs and Cantwell added 18. Rachel Salvo pitched in with eight kills. Setter Kate Comey handed out 39 assists.

In the nightcap, both teams played superb defense, surpassing 100 digs. The Fords had six players reach double-figures for a total of 115. Cal Lutheran (13-10) put five in double-digits and had 101 for the match.

The Regals took the first set, 25-19, but Haverford bounced back for 25-20 and 25-21 wins. Cal Lutheran took a tightly contested fourth set, 27-25, but the Fords won the decisive fifth, 15-12.

Rebecca Salvo once again led the way with 18 kills and 24 digs. Rachel Salvo had 16 kills and 21 digs while Cantwell added 14 kills and 24 digs. Jenine Abbassi connected on 10 kills and three blocks. Comey set up the offense with 55 assists. She and Caitlyn Tranquillo both had 16 digs and Franny Glick recorded 14.

Haverford remains on the road Wednesday, although closer to home. They will face Washington College in Centennial Conference action at 7 p.m.
