Fords give No. 2 Juniata all they can handle in 3-0 loss

HUNTINGTDON, Pa. – Despite losing to No. 2 Juniata College, 3-0, on Wednesday evening, the No. 21-ranked Haverford College volleyball team played the Eagles tough. Haverford took Juniata to the limit in the first and third sets before falling 27-25. The Eagles won the second set, 25-16.

Haverford (13-2) had a tough time stopping the Eagles attack game. Juniata (12-1) hit .305 as a team and had five individuals with an attack percentage over .300. Drew Barnhart and Kelsey Fuller led the Eagles with 12 kills apiece while Paige Johnson added 10.

Rebecca Salvo led the Fords with 11 kills and a .360 hitting percentage. Rachel Salvo tallied eight kills on the night.

The Scarlet and Black took a 3-0 lead in an opening set that was very tight. Juniata had a four-point lead twice, but the second time HC rallied back to take the lead, 25-24, on a kill by Olivia Coburn-Flynn. Haverford committed attack errors on the next three points, allowing Juniata to take a 1-0 advantage.

A breathtaking third set had 17 tied scores and 11 lead changes. Juniata took the largest lead of the set, 15-12, on a kill by Johnston. The Fords responded by taking the next three points to tie the score and nine out of the next 13 points to go up by three. A kill by Rebecca Salvo put HC ahead, 22-20, forcing the Eagles to call timeout. After the timeout Rebecca Salvo connected on another kill to put the Fords two points away from taking the set.

With their backs to the wall the Eagles took the next four points to go up, 24-23. Both teams traded kills and then Juniata committed a service error to tie the score at 25, but consecutive kills by Johnston clinched the victory for the Eagles.

Haverford will be in action twice on Saturday at Gettysburg College. The Fords take on Gettysburg in a rematch of last year's Centennial Conference championship at 11 a.m. and then face the University of Scranton at 1 p.m.
