Volleyball takes down Dips, 3-1, in battle of unbeatens

LANCASTER, Pa. – In a clash between two undefeated teams in the Centennial Conference, the No. 20 Haverford College volleyball team prevailed over Franklin & Marshall College, 3-1, Wednesday evening. The Diplomats took the first set, but Haverford stormed back to win the final three.

The two teams were evenly matched across the stat sheet. The only glaring difference was Franklin & Marshall (18-4, 5-1 CC) committed nine more attack errors.

F&M took the first match, 25-23, thanks to six kills from Jessica Poucel. Haverford (19-2, 5-0 CC) bounced back for a second set victory. Rebecca Salvo delivered six kills to even the match at one apiece.

The Fords established a 7-3 lead in the third set. Six more kills by Salvo and four services aces by HC led to a 25-18 victory.

The Diplomats gave Haverford everything they could handle in the fourth set. F&M held a 17-12 advantage after consecutive kills by Sydney Seydel and Marie Eble. Attack errors by the Diplomats helped Haverford get close, but kills by Rachel Salvo, Franny Glick and Kelsey Cantwell gave the Scarlet and Black a 23-22 lead. The Fords held on for a 26-24 win thanks to F&M errors.

Rebecca Salvo led Haverford with 15 kills and 14 digs. Kelsey Cantwell added 13 kills and 10 digs. Kate Comey dished out 42 assists.

Seydel recorded a match-high 16 kills for F&M. Stephanie Armstrong chipped in with 11. Pam Horner had 41 assists.

The Fords will have nine days to rest until their next match. Haverford travels to California to play in the Cal Lutheran Tournament from Oct. 16-17. The Fords take on Pomona-Pitzer Friday, Oct. 16 at 12:30 PST in the first match of the weekend.
