Volleyball sweeps Hopkins, 3-0, in battle of unbeatens

BALTIMORE – The Haverford College volleyball team won its fourth consecutive match and remained unbeaten in the Centennial Conference with a 3-0 (25-16, 25-16, 25-17) victory over host Johns Hopkins University Saturday evening. The Fords dealt Hopkins its first conference loss and sit tied for first place with Franklin & Marshall College.

Laura Ramos had eight kills to lead the way for Haverford (9-9, 3-0 CC). Kelsey Cantwell and Haley Lowrance added seven kills apiece. Jenine Abbassi and Olivia Coburn-Flynn combined for 11 kills and no errors. Abbassi hit .447 and Coburn-Flynn swung at a .667 mark.

The Fords held Hopkins (10-10, 3-1 CC) to just a .021 hitting percentage thanks to 7.0 team blocks. Coburn-Flynn led HC with four while Kate Comey added three. Lowrance had a match-high 13 digs and Caitlyn Tranquillo contributed eight.

The Blue Jays were led by K.C. Stingl's eight kills. Brittany Zingl added seven for the hosts. Melissa Cole led the defense with 13 digs while Stingl added nine.

Haverford will be off until next weekend when it travels to the Christopher Newport (Va.) University Invitational. The Fords take on Salisbury (Md.) University at 4 p.m. and Washington & Lee (Va.) University at 6 p.m. Friday. Saturday, HC plays No. 6 Christopher Newport at 11 a.m. and Virginia Wesleyan College at 3 p.m.
