Win over Garnet sets volleyball up to chase 'one for thumb' at home

SWARTHMORE, Pa. – The Haverford College volleyball team's 3-1 Centennial Conference victory Wednesday night over host Swarthmore College clinched the regular season title, and assures the Fords they will have the chance to try for their fifth consecutive league tournament crown on their home court next weekend.

Haverford (16-12, 9-0 CC) captured Wednesday's match with scores of 25-20, 25-19, 23-25 and 25-19 over the Garnet (17-9, 7-2) who fall into a three-way tie for second-place in the league standings. Despite the loss Swarthmore has clinched a spot in the tournament with the Fords.

Kate Comey set up the offensive attack against Swarthmore with 47 set assists. Jenine Abbassi led the Fords with 17 kills and a .452 hitting percentage. Kelsey Cantwell's 11 kills, Laura Ramos' nine, and Olivia Coburn-Flynn's eight kills combined with Abbassi's total to spur the Fords to the victory.

Defensively, at the net Haverford totaled 10 team blocks getting six from Coburn-Flynn and three each from Abbassi and Cantwell. Caitlyn Tranquillo led the team on the floor with 21 digs while Kaelyn Anderson chipped in with 16 and Hayley Lowrance picked up 13 digs.

Haverford has the opportunity to finish unbeaten in the regular season for the second season in a row Saturday afternoon when McDaniel College visits the GIAC for a 1 p.m. conference match. The Fords then take on non-conference foe Cabrini College in a Main Line classic at approximately 4 p.m. to close out the regular season.

Winners of the past four Centennial playoffs, host Haverford will shoot for its fifth in-a-row beginning with a semifinal match Saturday, Nov. 6 against the winner of Wednesday night's No. 4 versus No. 5-seed match. The tournament championship will follow Sunday afternoon with the winner of Saturday's semifinals.

In Hood Trophy competition between the Fords and Swarthmore, volleyball's victory combined with field hockey's triumph earlier in the day, and women's soccer's win over the Garnet Tuesday night give Haverford a 3-0 lead in the trophy standings.
