Volleyball drops a pair to open season

HAVERFORD, Pa. – The Haverford College volleyball team lost both its matches Saturday at the 25th Annual Haverford Invitational. Frostburg State University downed the Fords, 3-1 (25-15, 28-26, 24-26, 25-20), in the morning. In the afternoon, Stevens Institute of Technology downed Haverford by a 3-1 (25-18, 15-25, 25-18, 25-13) count as well.

Frostburg State (3-0) dealt the Fords their first loss at Gooding Arena since Oct. 18, 2008. Haverford had a tough time stopping the Bobcats Sarah Stephens who amassed 24 kills and a .340 hitting percentage. Stephens helped the Bobcats to a 50-39 advantage in kills over Haverford (0-2).

The Fords struggled offensively, hitting just .091. Kelsey Cantwell led the way for HC with 13 kills and added 11 digs. Laura Ramos contributed 11 kills and Kate Comey shelled out 37 assists. Caitlyn Tranquillo led the defensive effort with 20 digs while Jenine Abbassi had five blocks.

Frostburg State placed four players in double-digits in digs. Amber Winterling led the way with 14. Kylie Carrington handed out a match-high 43 assists.

In the nightcap, the Fords registered more kills (48-40) and digs (47-39) than Stevens (4-0), but the Ducks held a distinct advantage in hitting percentage (.296-.090) and blocks (15-5). Haverford struggled to find a consistent rhythm offensively and much of that was due to Stevens's command of the net. Chrissy Dickinson led the way with eight block assists. Kate Janes added five while Maggie Kowalska had two block solos and six block assists.

The Scarlet and Black had three reach double-figures in kills. Cantwell recorded a match-high 13 while Ramos and Haley Lowrance netted 10. Lowrance also tallied 11 digs for her first career double-double.

In day two of the Haverford Invitational Sunday, the Fords host Eastern University at 10 a.m. and Carnegie Mellon University at 2:30 p.m. Last season Eastern ousted the Fords from the NCAA tournament with a 3-0 victory in the second round.
