Volleyball salvages weekend with sweep of Carnegie Mellon

HAVERFORD, Pa. – After falling to No. 18 Eastern University Sunday morning, 3-0 (25-21, 25-21, 25-9), the Haverford College volleyball team got in the win column in the afternoon with a convincing 3-0 (25-19, 25-12, 25-19) victory over Carnegie Mellon University at the 25th Annual Haverford Invitational.

Haverford (1-3) had four players with at least eight kills versus Carnegie Mellon (2-3). Laura Ramos led the team with 11, Kelsey Cantwell and Haley Lowrance collected nine apiece and Olivia Coburn-Flynn had eight. Those four helped contribute to the Fords' lopsided 43-29 advantage in kills over CMU. Haverford also had its highest hitting percentage of the young season at a .571 clip. Coburn-Flynn hit a sizzling .571.

Defense also played a key role in HC's first victory of the season. The Fords held a 47-37 advantage in digs. Cantwell tallied 11 while Caitlyn Tranquillo notched 10. Lowrance had another solid defensive effort with eight digs.

In the morning, the Fords had a difficult time stopping Eastern's (4-0) Courtney Reinhold. She registered 17 kills and a .441 hitting percentage in the match. Haverford held the rest of the Eagles offense in check as they combined to hit only .297. Coburn-Flynn had a solid match for HC. The sophomore had a team-high 11 kills while hitting .360.

Lowrance reached double-digits in digs for the second straight match with 14. Tranquillo added 10. Kelly Groff tallied a match-high 19 digs for the Eagles while Reinhold and Heather Kauffman combined for seven block assists.

At the conclusion of the day's last match the all-tournament team was announced. Sarah Byrne of Stevens was named tournament MVP. In addition to Byrne, Sarah Stephens (Frostburg State), Maria Horning (Eastern), Aislinn McCloskey (Carnegie Mellon), Courtney Reinhold (Eastern), Maggie Kowolska (Stevens) and Cameron Griffin (Carnegie Mellon) made the all-tournament team.

The Fords hit the road for the first time this season as they travel to Elizabethtown College Wednesday evening for a 7 p.m. match.
