Volleyball sweeps pair to close out regular season

HAVERFORD, Pa. – The Haverford College volleyball team swept McDaniel College, 3-0 (25-10, 25-9, 25-12), Saturday afternoon to close out the Centennial Conference slate a perfect 10-0 for the second consecutive season. In their second match of the day the Fords downed Cabrini College, 3-0 (25-11, 25-22, 25-20), to improve their win streak to nine matches.

Against McDaniel (3-20, 2-8 CC), the Fords hit .382 as a team and amassed 45 kills to just 11 errors. Jenine Abbassi went for a match-high 13 kills and hit .417. Kelsey Cantwell added 11 kills and a .429 hitting percentage. Kate Comey had a solid performance, handing out 34 assists. The Fords recorded 13 service aces and were led by Kaelyn Anderson and Caitlyn Tranquillo who both had five.

Haverford (18-12, 10-0 CC) outplayed the Green Terror on defense, tallying 45 kills to just 32 for the opponent. Anderson had a match-best 13 while Comey followed with nine and Cantwell had eight.

Jackie Hawkins and Anne McShea both had four kills to lead McDaniel. Sarah Byron registered eight digs.

The Fords hit .375 as a team and tallied 15 kills in the first set against Cabrini (21-7) and never looked back. Cantwell totaled 11 kills and a .348 hitting percentage. Laura Ramos added eight kills and Abbassi had seven. Both Cantwell and Lowrance had four service aces.

Tranquillo put up a match-high 19 digs on defense while Abbassi had five blocks.

Haverford held the Cavaliers to just 20 kills and a .011 hitting percentage. Stephanie Recklau had six kills to lead Cabrini. Sophia Sokolovich had 13 digs while Courtney Abel and Michelle McCrossin had nine each.

Prior to the start of the McDaniel match Cantwell was honored for Senior Day. She closed out the regular season with a team-best 319 kills and 3.10 kills per set.

The Fords will host the Centennial Conference tournament next Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 6-7. Haverford's opponent will be the winner of Wednesday's Nos. 4-5 seed playoff match between Swarthmore College and Gettysburg College. Start times for all tournament matches will be announced Monday.
