Volleball finishes with split on final day of Christopher Newport Invite

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Haverford College volleyball team closed out its trip to the 2010 Christopher Newport Invitational with a 3-0 win over the Marlins from Virginia Wesleyan College.

The Fords improved to 10-12 overall with the victory over VWC (13-7), topping the Marlins by 25-13, 25-21 and 25-7 scores.

Earlier in the day Haverford dropped a 3-0 decision to the 6th-ranked hosts by scores of 25-21, 25-21 and 25-19.

Laura Ramos had a Fords-best eight kills in the sweep of Va. Wesleyan while Jenine Abbassi added six, and Olivia Coburn-Flynn and Kelsey Cantwell contributed five kills apiece.

Setting up the attack was Kate Comey who finished with 25 set assists. Also key to the offense in the victory were three service aces each from Comey and Caitlyn Tranquillo.

Tranquillo also made her mark defensively posting a team-best 12 digs in the match. Abbassi, with four blocks, and Coburn-Flynn, with three, helped key the victory at the net for Haverford.

In the early match, Abbassi registered a team-leading seven kills in the loss to the highly-ranked Captains while Haley Lowrance added six. Comey posted 26 assists for the Fords' offensive attack.

Defensively, Kaelyn Anderson led Haverford with 11 digs.

The Fords will be in action for the third consecutive day Sunday afternoon when they travel to Ursinus College for a Centennial Conference match scheduled for a 1 p.m. start.
