Bergin gets 200th in volleyball’s 3-1 victory over F&M

HAVERFORD, Pa. – In a battle of Centennial Conference heavyweights, the Haverford College volleyball team defeated Franklin & Marshall College, 3-1 (26-24, 24-26, 25-12, 25-14), Friday evening at Gooding Arena to remain the only undefeated team in the conference. The victory was the 200th of head coach Amy Bergin's career.

This match had all the makings of a classic five-setter early on with each team taking a 26-24 decision in the first two sets, but Haverford grabbed all the momentum in the third and never looked back.

Haverford (12-12, 5-0 CC) held a 15-10 lead in the first, but the Diplomats reeled off five of the next six points. The Fords still held the advantage until a service error and two kills from F&M's (16-6, 5-2 CC) Sydney Seydel quickly put the visitors in front, 24-21. A kill by Kelsey Cantwell got HC rolling and three straight kills from Laura Ramos and a service ace by Cantwell put the first set away.

Neither team established more than a one-point lead in the second set until an Olivia Coburn-Flynn kill put the Fords up, 20-18. Ramos followed with a kill, but the Diplomats clawed back and eventually took the lead on a pair of HC attack errors. Jenine Abbassi tied the score, 24-24, on a kill, but F&M took the next two points to even the match.

The Fords jumped out to a 12-3 lead in the third while hitting .381 to coast to victory. Haverford took a large lead midway through the fourth to put the match away.

Cantwell had a match-high 16 kills and hit .364 to go along with three service aces. Ramos added 12 kills and 13 digs for her seventh double-double of the season. Abbassi contributed eight kills and a pair of service aces. Kate Comey handed out 32 assists and recorded two services aces as well. Defensively, Hayley Lowrance played solid with 12 digs while Coburn-Flynn assisted on four blocks.

Candice Tussing and Nicole Morano both had 10 kills for F&M. Tussing also had three service aces and six blocks. Katy May and Pam Horner had 11 digs apiece.

The Fords will be home again Tuesday when they host Washington College at 7 p.m.
