Fords refuse to go quietly in loss to #5 Eagles

ST. DAVIDS, Pa. – Haverford College's volleyball team surrendered points grudgingly to fifth-ranked Eastern University in a Main Line match-up Friday night, but the host Eagles outlasted the visiting Fords for a 3-0 non-conference victory.

Haverford (10-12) led the once-beaten Eagles (24-1) in all three games before succombing to the nationallly-ranked host in each.

The Fords owned an 18-16 lead in game one before falling by a score of 25-20, then led 10-9 and were tied with Eastern at 11-11 in game two which the Eagles rebounded to win 25-19.

In game three, Haverford broke out to an early 6-1 lead and led at 12-11 before the hosts rallied for a 25-17 match-clinching win.

Haley Lowrance posted team-highs in kills with seven, and set assists with 17 for the Fords in defeat. Sarah Brody picked up 12 digs while Caitlyn Tranquillo added 11 for Haverford.

The Fords played a strong game at the net registering eight team blocks, compared to just five for Eastern, with Haverford's Jenine Abbassi accumulating a match-high four blocks (three solo, two block assists).

Next up for Haverford is a Saturday trip to Westminster, Md., where the team will jump back into Centennial Conference action with a 1 p.m. match against McDaniel College.
