Volleyball picked to finish fifth in Centennial

LANCASTER, Pa. - The Haverford College volleyball team was voted to finish fifth in the Centennial Conference 2012 preseason volleyball poll as released by the conference office Tuesday morning.

The Fords amassed 62 points in the annual voting of the conference head coaches as the first five spots in the poll mirrored the final regular season standings of the 2011 season. Johns Hopkins University, 2011 Centennial champion, earned the top slot in the poll with all 10 possible first-place votes since teams are not permitted to vote for themselves. Finishing second, and meriting the remaining first-place vote, was Franklin & Marshall College with 89 points. Gettysburg College (79 points) took third over Swarthmore College (75 points) by a narrow margin.

In 2011, the Fords went 14-14 overall and 6-4 in conference play under the direction of first-year head coach Michele Benoit. Outlasting Swarthmore in Centennial quarterfinal action, Haverford gave top seed and host Johns Hopkins a battle before falling in the semifinals.
