Volleyball overpowers Washington, 3-0

HAVERFORD, Pa. - The Haverford College volleyball team kept pace in the Centennial Conference playoff race with a 3-0 defeat of visiting Washington College Wednesday night at Gooding Arena.

Jumping out to a 11-5 advantage in set one, the Fords (19-8, 6-2 CC) cruised to a 25-19 victory on the strength of a .242 attack percentage. Freshmen Keri Godbe and Nina Mutty were aggressive on offense with four attacks each.

Haverford held a 4-2 lead early in set two when Mutty stepped to the service line. Mutty's consistent service game enabled the Fords' advantage to grow to 9-3 before the Shorewomen (11-15, 3-6) rallied to tie the score at 13-13. Undeterred by Washington fighting back, the Fords persevered and again claimed a 25-19 set win.

Looking to close out the match, Haverford pushed out to a 14-6 lead in set three. The Shorewomen pulled within two (24-22) before a final kill from Godbe finished off Washington (25-22).

Godbe (11), Mutty (10) and Meg O'Day (10) all tallied double digits in kills as the Fords registered a .220 hitting percentage in the match. O'Day, the top-ranked hitter in the conference, led the way with a .381 attack percentage individually (two errors). Olivia Walsh contributed 36 of Haverford's 41 assists on the night.

Madison Fuelling paced the Fords on defense with 12 digs while Godbe (11), Mutty (10) and Walsh (10) also reached double figures.

Kristin Lee led the Shorewomen with eight kills as the team managed a mere .114 hitting percentage. Kate Liccione took match-high honors with 17 digs.

Currently residing in fourth place in the conference, Haverford gets right back into action Thursday night as it makes the short trip to Bryn Mawr College. The contest against the Owls begins at 7 p.m.
