Season Review: Young volleyball squad makes its presence known in the Centennial

HAVERFORD, Pa. - A look back on a season of growth for the Haverford College volleyball team:

Signature Wins: Four Fords tallied double digits in kills as Haverford outlasted Franklin & Marshall College, 3-2, on October 6 to account for the Diplomats' lone regular-season conference setback. Motivated by the victory over F&M -- the eventual Centennial Conference tournament host -- the Fords, powered by Keri Godbe's 10 kills and 11 digs, swept past Gettysburg College in the opening round of the conference playoffs on Nov. 1 to avenge a 3-1 regular-season loss to the Bullets on Sept. 29.

Season Notes: The Fords qualified for the conference playoffs and advanced to the conference semifinals for the 13th consecutive year … Haverford recorded the second-most wins in the conference (21-10) and finished fourth in the conference standings (7-3) …  The Fords ranked third in the conference in hitting percentage (.207) and second in kills (11.79 per set) powered by freshman Meg O'Day who led the conference in hitting percentage (.345) and finished fifth in kills (3.08 per set) … Emily Mills (eighth, .257) and Olivia Coburn-Flynn (ninth, .251) also finished among the conference leaders in hitting percentage … O'Day (342) and Godbe (330) were two of just three players in the conference to go over 300 kills this season …  O'Day (sixth) and Godbe (10th) both ranked among the top 10 in conference point producers … Olivia Walsh topped the conference in assists with 9.39 per set … Madison Fuelling ranked third in the conference in digs (4.51 per set) to help the Fords rank second in the conference in opponent hitting percentage (.135) … Freshman Nina Mutty led the team in service aces (35) and finished second in digs (362) … Coburn-Flynn graduates as the current career (228) and season (91 in 2010) record holder in block assists … Mills and Fuelling earned all-tournament team honors at the Haverford Invitational on the opening weekend of the season … O'Day and Mutty were named to the all-tournament team of the NYU Violet Classic (9/21-22).

Postseason Awards:

  • All-Centennial Conference: O'Day (first team); Godbe, Mills (honorable mention)
  • All-Centennial Academic Honor Roll: Sarah Brody, Olivia Coburn-Flynn, Emily Mills, Jordan Scolaro

Looking Ahead: Haverford will continue to mature next season as O'Day, Godbe , Walsh and Mutty will look to build off their impressive freshman campaigns. Fuelling and Sarah Brody return to anchor the defense as the Fords seek to remain in the upper echelon of the conference while also making some noise on the regional level.
