Volleyball opens season with 2-0 day at Haverford Invitational

HAVERFORD, Pa. - The Haverford College volleyball team began the season with two victories on the first day of the Haverford Invitational at Gooding Arena on Saturday afternoon. The host Fords got past Neumann University and Catholic University by identical 3-0 scores.

In Haverford's first match of the day against Neumann (0-2), sophomores Keri Godbe and Meg O'Day registered double-digit kills with 15 and 10, respectively, to key the sweep (25-16, 25-21, 25-18). O'Day committed just one error to finish with a .600 hitting percentage. Freshman Abby Keller contributed 21 assists in her first collegiate action.

Godbe was also active on defense with 10 digs while junior Sarah Brody chipped in with nine. Sophomore Nina Mutty played an impressive all-around game with nine kills, eight digs and two service aces.

Katelin Kuklentz was the only member of the Knights to reach double figures in kills (12) as the Fords held Neumann to a .175 attack percentage.

Haverford's final match of the day followed a similar script with Godbe and O'Day once again asserting themselves on the attack against Catholic (0-2). Godbe came through with 17 kills including eight in the first set while O'Day sparkled with 13 kills and no attack errors. Classmate Mutty added nine kills as the Fords took down the Cardinals by scores of 25-19, 25-19, 25-18.

Keller had another strong showing with 26 assists and nine digs. Brody led the defensive effort with a career-high 21 digs.

Haverford limited Catholic to a .125 attack percentage throughout the match with Kathryn Herrington registering a team-high 11 kills.

Tournament action continues on Sunday with the Fords entertaining Susquehanna University at 10 a.m. before taking on 16th-ranked Eastern University at 2 p.m.
