HAVERFORD, Pa. - Sophomores Meg O'Day and Keri Godbe combined for 64 kills as the Haverford College volleyball team went undefeated in two matches at Gooding Arena on Saturday afternoon. The Fords swept past rival Swarthmore College, 3-0, in Centennial Conference action to open the day and then capped the tri-match with a 3-1 non-conference win over Messiah College.
Godbe registered 15 kills while O'Day added 11 to key the sweep over the Garnet (25-20, 25-19, 25-17). Jeanna Kenney was a factor at the service line as she tied her career high with four of the hosts' nine aces. Olivia Walsh and Abby Keller each reached double figures in assists with 19 and 15, respectively.
Nine different players tallied digs against Swarthmore (13-11, 2-6 CC) as a solid team effort limited the Garnet to a .076 hitting percentage in the contest. Nina Mutty topped the squad with 14 digs while Godbe and Sarah Brody chipped in with 11 apiece. Junior Madison Fuelling also reached double digits with 10. O'Day helped the defensive cause with three block assists.
Swarthmore sophomore Madison Heppe, who leads the Centennial in digs, paced the Garnet's defensive effort with 14 digs.
Earning the first point in this year's Hood Trophy competition, Haverford (18-7, 4-4 CC) last swept the Garnet in 2009.
The Ford closed out the full day of matches with an impressive 3-1 victory (25-17, 21-25, 25-19, 25-19) over Messiah in their final non-conference contest of the season. The Falcons, currently tied for third in the Commonwealth Conference, entered Saturday riding a seven-match winning streak.
O'Day and Godbe once again powered the offense with 22 and 16 kills, respectively. Keller and Walsh contributed 22 assists apiece. Haverford had another strong performance at the service line with eight aces as Keller matched her career high with three.
Godbe took match-high honors in digs with 30 while Kenney added a career high 19. Fuelling reached double figures in digs for the 11th time this season with 17. O'Day finished with four of the Fords' 12 block assists in the contest.
Messiah senior Jessica Geib tallied a match-high 38 assists and freshman Jane Underman led the Falcons (16-11) in kills with 16.
Currently tied for sixth in the Centennial standings, Haverford's push for a spot in the conference playoffs continues on Wednesday night at Bryn Mawr College. The match against the Owls (12-14, 2-7) begins at 7 p.m.
