Volleyball Scores CC Win over Gettysburg; Sweeps Randolph

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – The Haverford College volleyball team scored its second Centennial Conference victory of the season with a 3-2 win over the Gettysburg College Bullets (20-25, 25-16, 25-22, 23-25, 15-8) at the Bream Gym on Saturday afternoon. Later in the day, the Fords swept the Randolph College Wildcats, 3-0 (25-12, 25-17, 25-10).

Senior Keri Godbe led Haverford with 15 kills and a match-high 26 digs vs. Gettysburg. Senior Meg O'Day joined in with 14 kills, two solo blocks and three block assists. Freshman Natalie Pisch had a season-high 13 kills while junior Valentine Courouble had a career-high 13 digs and secured her second career double-double with 11 kills.

It's the second time this season that Haverford has had four people with at least 10 kills in a match. The last time that happened before this year was in the Fords' 3-2 win over Franklin and Marshall Diplomats on Oct. 6, 2012.

In the first match of the day, the Fords found themselves trailing 15-7 in set one after an 11-1 run from the Bullets. The visitors had three straight points after a timeout, but Gettysburg countered with five of the next seven to take a 20-12 advantage. The Fords went on an 8-3 run to get back within three, but the Bullets scored the final two points of the set to take a 1-0 lead.

The turning point in set two was Haverford going on an 8-3 spurt, jumping ahead 20-15. After a service error, the Fords scored five consecutive tallies to tie the match at one.

Up 10-9 in the third set, the team produced an 8-2 rally, setting the score at 18-11. The Bullets possessed two more runs in them, registering seven of the next 10, to get within two. Kills by Courouble and O'Day, along with an attack error, gave Haverford set point. Two Fords' errors and a kill by Gettysburg's Maddie Weikert made the score 24-22, but O'Day supplanted the set victory for Haverford with a kill.

Looking to close the match, Haverford found itself down 18-11 after a 7-1 surge by Gettysburg. The Fords didn't go away, clawing all the way to tie the match at 22-all. After exchanging points, three straight kills by the home squad tied the match at two.

Tied at five in the deciding set, head coach Michele Benoit's team logged a 5-1 sprint to jump in front and force a Gettysburg timeout. The stoppage in play did nothing to stop the Fords' momentum as they cruised to a 15-8 set win and a 3-2-match victory.

After a quick breather, Haverford battled Randolph College in the second match of the day. Despite just playing in the first match, the Fords had no trouble dropping the Wildcats by a 25-12 score in set one. In front by one at 8-7, Haverford went on the move by scoring 12 of the next 15 points to coast to a 25-17 set two win. Set three followed a similar path as the first two as the Fords went on an 18-5 stretch and never looked back with a 25-10 victory.

Godbe and O'Day paced the Haverford offense vs. Randolph with 12 kills each. Godbe now has 1,403 career kills and is three shy of tying Jelyn Meyer '04 for fourth in program history. O'Day is right behind her teammate as she places sixth all-time with 1,372 career kills. Senior Nina Mutty tied her career high with six service aces in the sweep.

With its two wins, Haverford improved to 11-6 overall and 2-1 in the Centennial Conference. Gettysburg dropped to 9-9 this season and 1-2 in conference play, while Randolph fell to 2-16. The Fords will welcome Ursinus to the Gooding '84 Arena on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
