LANCASTER, Pa. – The Haverford College volleyball team defeated the Franklin and Marshall Diplomats, 3-1 (25-20, 17-25, 25-19, 25-21) at the Mayser Center on Friday evening.

Tied at eight in the first set, Haverford jumped in front with a 7-2 run to take a 15-10 lead. Franklin and Marshall got back within one at 21-20, but Haverford ended the set with final four points, highlighted by kills from seniors Meg O'Day and Keri Godbe

Last year's Centennial Conference Champions led the entire second set to tie the match at one. Up by two, the Diplomats scored 10 of the next 15 points to take a 17-10 lead. Haverford would get within six, but got no closer as F&M took the set, 25-17.

Trailing by two, Haverford scored six straight, taking an 11-7 advantage in the crucial third set. Ahead by two (11-9), the Fords looked to have seized control of the set, registering 10 of 11 points. The home team had another rally with a 6-0 spurt to get within six at 22-16, leading to a Haverford timeout. After three more tallies from the Diplomats, two kills by O'Day and an attack error gave the Fords a 2-1 lead in the match.

Despite scoring five of the first six in the fourth set, Haverford saw its lead evaporate as Franklin and Marshall fought back to take a 14-13 lead. The set then saw four lead changes and four ties before a kill by freshman Natalie Pisch gave Haverford a 20-19 advantage. F&M called timeout, but that did not stop momentum as the Fords won the set with five of the final seven points, taking the match, 3-1.

O'Day recorded a match-high 20 kills along with a .341 attack percentage. It's her second 20-kill match of the season. Junior Valentine Courouble had 11 kills and 11 digs for her third double-double this year. The junior also added a career-high two solo blocks and two block assists in the win. Senior Keri Godbe's nine kills moved into her third place on the all-time kills list (1,412), surpassing Jelyn Meyer' 04 (1,406). Sophomore Zoe Wong (24) and senior OIivia Walsh (22) combined for 46 assists to quarterback the Fords' offense.

With the victory, head coach Michele Benoit's squad improves to 12-6 overall and 3-1 in the Centennial Conference while Franklin and Marshall drops to 10-9 this season and 3-3 in conference play. Haverford currently sits third in the conference standings behind Swarthmore (4-0) and Johns Hopkins (4-1). The volleyball team will look to continue its perfect October vs. Muhlenberg on Wednesday (7 p.m.). The Fords have lost just twice to the Mules since 1999.
