Volleyball Cruises By Bryn Mawr

BRYN MAWR, Pa. – The Haverford College volleyball team won its fifth consecutive Centennial Conference match as it took down the Bryn Mawr College Owls, 3-0 (25-13, 25-15, 25-20) at the Class of 1958 Gym on Wednesday night.

The Fords started off quickly with six of the first seven points in the first set, leading to an Owls' timeout. Later, Haverford went on another run, scoring eight straight to take a 20-7 lead, before cruising to a 25-13 victory.

The second set had a similar script as the previous one as Haverford registered seven of the first 10 tallies. In front by four (11-7), the Fords went on a 10-4 push to take a 21-11 advantage, eventually taking the set, 25-15.

Bryn Mawr curbed Haverford's momentum with a 7-4 sprint to open set three. Haverford fought back to tie the match at nine. The teams went back and forth with seven ties and six lead changes before the Fords went ahead 21-18. After an error, the Fords scored four of the the final five points (25-20) to sweep the match.

Senior Meg O'Day had 12 kills (.348 attack percentage) while junior Valentine Courouble added 10 kills (.364 attack percentage) in the win. Six other Fords recorded a kill in the match. Seven players posted an assist, highlighted by sophomore Zoe Wong's 14.

After holding Ursinus to a .022 attack percentage on Monday, Haverford's defense was even better vs. Bryn Mawr as the Owls could only muster a .010 attack percentage. The home team had a negative percentage in the first set and a .042 percentage in the final two sets. Courouble had the only block for the Fords with a solo tally. Senior Jeanna Kenney helped out the back line with a match-high 15 digs. Kenney has at least 10 digs in 19 of 24 matches this season.

With the victory, the Fords remain a half game out of first place in the Centennial Conference behind Swarthmore (7-1). Haverford stands at 16-8 overall and 6-1 in conference play while Bryn Mawr drops to 6-14 overall and 1-7 in the conference. The Fords haven't lost to Bryn Mawr since 1998, a span of 18 matches. The volleyball team will now travel to McDaniel for a tri-match with Green Terror (12 p.m.) and FDU-Florham Devils (2 p.m.) on Saturday. McDaniel handed Swarthmore its only conference loss earlier in this season.
