BALTIMORE – After dropping the first two sets, the Haverford College volleyball team fought all the way back to win 3-2 over the Swarthmore College Garnet (16-25, 16-25, 25-18, 25-23, 18-16.) in the Centennial Conference Semifinals at the Goldfarb Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon.

Haverford will look for the program's fifth Centennial Conference title and sixth NCAA Tournament appearance tomorrow vs. the McDaniel Green Terror at 1 p.m. The Green Terror defeated Johns Hopkins in the first conference semifinal on Saturday in five sets (25-17, 25-14, 18-25, 12-25, 15-11).

Earlier this year, McDaniel defeated Haverford, 3-0 (25-22, 25-23, 25-23) at the Gill Center in Westminster, Md. The two conference rivals have met just once in the Centennial Conference playoffs with Haverford sweeping McDaniel the 2007 conference final.

Senior Meg O'Day led the Fords with 20 kills and a .447 attack percentage. Senior Keri Godbe (21 digs, 11 kills) and junior Valentine Courouble (13 digs and 10 kills) recorded double-doubles. Three different Fords had at least 20 digs in seniors Jeanna Kenney (27), Nina Mutty (21) and Godbe (21). Senior Olivia Walsh (25) and sophomore Zoe Wong (25) combined for 50 assists in the win.

Swarthmore had the first separation of the match as it tallied eight of nine points to take a 22-14 lead in the first set. Haverford scored the next two points, but Swarthmore scored three straight to win, 25-16. The Garnet held the Fords to a  .065 attack percentage in the win.

Tied at seven in set two, the Garnet went on a 7-2 spurt to take a 15-9 advantage. Down by six, Haverford made one more push, getting within three at 19-16, but Swarthmore ended the set with six consecutive points to take a 2-0 lead in the match. The Garnet never trailed in taking the first two sets.

The Fords scored the first six points of the third set, highlighted by four service aces from Godbe. Swarthmore didn't go away, cutting its deficit to two at 13-11. Haverford countered with five of six points (18-12), but Swarthmore got back within three (19-16). Haverford allowed just two points the rest of the way, taking the set, 25-18.

Even at 12-all, Swarthmore went on a 5-0 outburst to take its largest lead of the fourth stanza (17-12). This time, it was Haverford that made a run, tying the score at 20-all. Back-to-back errors put the Garnet in front, 22-20. The three sequential tallies by the Fords led to a Garnet timeout. After the stoppage, kills by O'Day and Kenney sent the Centennial Conference semifinal match to a fifth set.

The fifth set featured 15 ties and eight lead changes. Neither team led by more than one except for two occasions at 5-3 and 18-16. The Fords faced match point after a ball-handling error (14-13), but head coach Michele Benoit called back-to-back timeouts. Two errors by the Garnet gave the Fords the lead (15-14), but the Hood Trophy rival fought off match point with two consecutive points to take a 16-15 lead. A kill by Godbe gave the set its 15th tie (16-16). After an attack error, a block by sophomore Kaylynn Mayo and freshman Natalie Pisch sent the Fords to the Centennial Conference Championship.

With the win, the Fords have now won at least 20 matches every year since 2012. It's only the second time in program history that the team has won at least 20 matches in four straight seasons.
