SWARTHMORE, Pa. - The fifth-seeded Haverford College volleyball team (11-13, 6-4 CC) begins the 2023 postseason with a Centennial Conference quarterfinal matchup against fourth-seeded Swarthmore (15-9, 8-2 CC) on Wednesday at Tarble Pavilion. The contest is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start as the two rivals face off for the second time in less than a week.

A Familiar Foe
The Fords are 37-26 all-time against Swarthmore, including a 13-7 record on the road in this historic rivalry. Although the upcoming postseason contest does not count towards the Hood Trophy, Swarthmore holds a slight 4-2 edge at the end of the fall sports season.

Keeping Up With The Jones
Haverford junior middle blocker Taylor Jones currently ranks first in the Centennial Conference and 11th in the nation for hitting percentage (.393). Jones has only committed 25 errors this season on 455 swings, which is the fourth-fewest errors among all qualified hitters. To qualify, a player must average 3.33 attacks per set and play in at least 66 percent of their team's sets.

Fords In The Statistical Rankings
Juliet Young ranks second in the Centennial Conference in digs per set (5.19) and third in total digs (446). Kayla Chu is fourth in assists per set (7.13) and total assists (599). As a team, Haverford ranks third in the conference in aces per set (2.52), blocks per set (1.78), and total team service aces (217).

So, We Meet Again … and Again…and Again.
Haverford is set to make its 19th appearance in the conference playoffs over the past 23 seasons when it takes the court at Tarble Pavilion on Wednesday evening. Remarkably, this marks the fifth consecutive playoff berth where the Fords will square off against Swarthmore to kick off the postseason, dating back to 2015. During the last meeting in Baltimore during the 2021 campaign, Haverford swept the Garnet to advance to the CC Championship game.

A Postseason Pedigree
In total, Haverford has hoisted the Centennial Conference championship trophy on four occasions, rising to the top of the conference in consecutive seasons from 2006 to 2009. Haverford also made the NCAA tournament as an at-large selection in 2014 and 2021.

Last Time Out
Haverford concluded its regular season on Saturday afternoon inside Gooding '84 Arena. Unfortunately, the Fords fell to their rivals from Swarthmore in four sets. The Fords started strong with a 25-11 triumph in set one, but the Garnet responded with 25-20, 25-20, and 25-19 wins to secure a road victory.
