Leonard delivers historic hat trick

HAVERFORD, Pa. – Senior Thomas Leonard of the Haverford College cricket team recorded the first hat trick in program history Saturday afternoon against host Philadelphia Cricket Club (PCC).

A hat trick occurs when a bowler dismisses three batsmen with consecutive deliveries.

Despite Leonard's historic moment, the Fords were downed, 70-46, by PCC. Haverford rebounded on Sunday with a 168-131 victory over visiting British Officers Cricket Club (BOCC).

Saturday against PCC, Haverford won the toss and chose to field first on a soft pitch due to rain the evening before. PCC were all out after 70 runs. Thomas was 4-for-22 including his hat trick, and teammate Alisa Strayer bowled 3-for-12.

Haverford netted 46 runs on an uneven wicket at PCC, the Fords' batters experiencing difficulties with the wicket. Sameep Thapa finished with 14 runs for visiting Haverford.

Sunday against BOCC the Fords won the toss and this time elected to bat first. Andriy Mshanetskyy and Thapa opened the inning and put up 70 runs for the opening partnership. By the time Haverford went all out the host team had accumulated 168 runs led by Thapa's 66. Mshanetskyy finished with 30 runs, Thomas netted 41, and Abdullah Khan chipped in with 15 not out with a pair of big sixes.

With BOCC batting, Mshanetskyy, 3-for-12, and Thomas, 2-for-18, bowled well for the Fords, helping limit the visitors to just 131 runs in their 25 overs.

The victory over BOCC kept Haverford undefeated at Cope over the fall and first half of the spring schedule.
