Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area Release

PHILADELPHIA – Haverford College cricketer Richard Phillips has been named to the 2017-18 Philadelphia Inquirer Men's At-Large Academic team, the Philadelphia Area Sports Information Directors Association (Philly-SIDA) announced in a release on Tuesday afternoon. Phillips becomes the first Haverford cricketer to garner the Academic All-Area award. 

In order to be eligible for Academic All-Area honors, an athlete must be in at least his or her second year at the institution and hold a cumulative grade-point average of 3.20 or better. The team is voted on by the sports information offices of the 30 area institutions from the Philadelphia metropolitan area that compose Philly-SIDA.

Philips, from Bordentown, N.J, has appeared primarily as a batsman for the Fords while also seeing time as a bowler. 

Phillips was one of 15 Ambler Scholar Athletes recognized in 2017-18, a plaudit bestowed upon senior student-athletes with the Top GPAs at Haverford. Earlier this year, Phillips earned the 2018 Computer Research Association's Outstanding Undergraduate Researchers Award. Phillips was one of four undergraduates across the nation honored with the prize and the only one from a liberal arts college. The award is the main award recognizing outstanding undergraduate research in computer science.

The senior has also had his research on cheminformatics and machine learning published in the Journal of Physical Chemistry and also presented at the 2017 Workshop on Human Interpretability in Machine Learning.
