Full Liberty League Awards Release

HAVERFORD, Pa. - Francis Betkowski, a first year on Haverford's men's squash team, has earned a spot on the Liberty League Honor Roll for the week ending November 12, 2023. This achievement marks a significant milestone for Haverford, as this is the first recognition for the Fords in the conference, as Haverford recently joined the Liberty League as an associate member for men's and women's squash in the summer of 2023.

Betkowski's notable performance during the inaugural week of the season highlights his resilience and skill on the court. Facing some unexpected challenges, Betkowski played two spots higher than his normal ladder position due to an illness and injury within the team lineup during his debut as a college player.

In his first match at the Pennsylvania State Championships, a prestigious tournament featuring top Pennsylvania teams, including top-ranked Penn, Betkowski competed admirably at the sixth flight on the ladder. He engaged in a thrilling 3-2 match against his Chatham University opponent, a squad ranked 15th in the country, showcasing his determination and talent against the Cougars.

The following day, the Mercersburg, Pa. product continued to make an impact at the #6 position, securing a victory against the #6 player from 27th-ranked Dickinson. This victory was particularly impressive as it contributed to Haverford's performance against a team ranked higher in the national standings.

The first two games of the matchup were barnburners, as Dickinson's Jack Corkrum managed to earn two straight points to win game one 12-10, while Betkowski gained two straight points in another ten-point tie to win game two 12-10.

Despite a valiant effort from Corkum, Betkowski was able to hold off his opponent to claim an 11-9 victory in game three, to take a one-point lead. Game four saw all the momentum ride with Betkowski, as the first-year won the all-important game 11-8. winning the flight and putting a Haverford point on the scoreboard.

Up next for Betkowski and the Fords is a match-up with No. 21 St. Lawrence in the friendly confines of the GIAC Squash Courts slated for a 12 p.m. start on Saturday. The match will serve as the annual staff/faculty appreciation match, as players will honor faculty and staff from around the Haverford campus.
