Men’s tennis wins close one over Lions, 5-4

HAVERFORD, Pa. – Andy Dougherty's victory at No. 3 singles lifted the Haverford College men's tennis team to a 5-4 victory over The College of New Jersey Thursday at Alumni Field House.

The Fords took victories at Nos. 1 and 2 doubles to take a 2-1 lead into singles action. In singles, Kevin Caulfield and Matt Romei won in straight sets at Nos. 1 and 4, respectively. Will Garrett and Jacob Weisenthal fell in straight sets at Nos. 5 and 6 to set up the winner take all scenario at No. 3.

Dougherty lost his first set to John Yu, 4-6, but responded with 7-5 and 6-0 victories in the second and third sets to clinch the victory for Haverford.

Haverford has now won three consecutive matches to improve to 4-5 overall. The Lions were dealt their first loss of the season, falling to 5-1.

The Fords get back into Centennial Conference play Saturday when they travel to Dickinson College for a noon match.
