Men’s tennis advances to conference semifinal with win over Shoremen

HAVERFORD, Pa. – The fourth-seeded Haverford College men's tennis team pulled out a 5-3 win over visiting fifth-seed Washington College in the Centennial Conference opening round Wednesday afternoon in Alumni Field House.

Haverford (9-9) advances to the semifinal round where it will face top-seed Johns Hopkins University Saturday, April 30 at 11 a.m. In the first meeting, the Blue Jays defeated the host Fords, 7-2, on April 9. Washington ends its season at 9-8.

Haverford got off to a solid start with two wins in the doubles matches. Matthew Cebul and Matt Romei teamed up to pick up an 8-3 win in the No. 2 flight. Will Garrett and Hailiu Yang were victorious in the No. 3 match by a count of 8-1.

The Fords claimed the victory by locking up points with straight-set wins in three singles matches. Andy Dougherty was a winner in the No. 3 spot by defeating Kyle Lisco, 6-3, 6-3. Matt Romei fought off Aaron Ellison to claim the No. 4 match, 6-0, 7-5. Romei is now tied for the team lead in singles wins with 12. Garrett provided the final point with his 6-1, 6-4 win over John Menzione in the No. 6 position.
